Squash

Squash provides an excellent cardiovascular workout. In one hour of squash, a player may expend approximately 700 to 1000 calories which is significantly more than most other sports and over 70% more than general tennis. The sport also provides a good upper and lower body workout by utilising both the legs to run around the court and the arms/torso to swing the racquet.

The game is played by two players (or four players for doubles) with standard rackets in a four-walled court with a small hollow rubber ball. The scoring system is easy to learn.

We have lots of Squash Courts in clubs and Leisure Centres throughout the county, and this is a sport for all ages and abilities.

England Squash is responsible for the organisation and promotion of squash in England. It comprises 38 CountyAssociations. Approx 1000 clubs and individual and player members.

Wigton Junior Graded Competition

Over the weekend of the 28th and 29th of November, Wigton Squash Club in Cumbria hosted a graded competition for U11’s and U13’s from all around Cumbria.
The competition which has been running for a number of years has a great reputation of being a fiercely contested affair and this year was no disappointment, with an entry of 35 players.
The closest and most tightly contested group was the U13 Boys ‘A’ group, with all four players being county players it produced some great squash. Wigton Squash Club’s Jake Twentyman was the eventual winner beating Windscales Jackson Holliday in a very good final.
Wigton nearly had a second title in the U11 Boys ‘B’ competition when Adam Gill put in a very good performance against Joseph Harris of Carlisle Squash Club, only to serve down at 10-9 down.
Overall it was a fantastic weekend and some very good performances. Thanks to Liz Jackson for organising.
