Sport Relief Fun

23rd January 2008

STAFF at a Carlisle health club Bannatyne's are limbering up to raise funds for Sport Relief. The national chain of Bannatyne’s Health Clubs has signed up to be official partners of the fundraiser which runs on 14th-16th March.

Carlisle’s Kingstown Road club is selling Sport Relief socks as part of the drive. Made from Fairtrade certified cotton, they cost £2, with at least £1 of that going to help change lives across the world.

Businessman Duncan Bannatyne tried on a pair for size last week during a visit to his Carlisle club. He said: “Sport Relief is a brilliant way to help people in the UK and around the world. I’d encourage anyone, no matter what their sporting ability, to rise to the challenge to raise money for this excellent charity.” Bannatyne’s is hosting a series of fund-raising events on March 14, including a charity lottery and simultaneous, UK-wide exercise class.

Sport Relief Miles are also being planned in various parts of Cumbria for Sunday, March 16. The Sheepmount in Carlisle will host one of the sponsored events at noon. Entry is £5 per adult and £2, with family discounts available. Others Miles also highlighted on the Sport Relief website are in Annan and Maryport.

Sue Tarrant, general manager of Bannatyne’s Health Club in Carlisle, said: “Working with Sport Relief is a great way for our members to use exercise to raise money for charity. “In the weeks before the Sport Relief weekend the club will be a hive of fundraising activity, which will be fun for both our members and people from the local community.” Bannatyne’s fitness advisors will also be helping to lead the warm-up sessions for people taking part in Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Miles across the UK.
