Over the past few years Cumbria Rugby Development Officer Liam Nicholls plus Colleagues Alan Moses (RDO Northumberland) and Philip Harvey (Ex Teesside RDO) have completed some gruelling bike rides in aid of The Amyloidosis Unit at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London.
The latest of these challenges included a 201 mile ride through the Northumberland Countryside into Edinburgh on the famous Coast & Castles Route. The ride time was 16hrs 30mins but was completed over a three day period.
The boys set off from Tyneside up the East Coast taking in some breathtaking views along the way. The route heads up towards Berwick then back down through the borders before climbing the Moorfoot Hills into Midlothian which offers a spectacular vista at the summit.
Having completed the Coast to Coast & Reivers Routes previously the Coast & Castles offered the longest distance yet, but the gradual climb along the way allowed the team to maintain a good average speed cycling around 5-6 Hrs a day. Over the duration of the ride the team were burning around 5,000 calories a day which they more than made up for in the evenings.
Over the past 3 years the group have raised in excess of £2,750 thanks to kind sponsorship from friends and colleagues.
“This was the first ride we had all really trained for and the pace we set showed that.” Said Liam Nicholls “This is a great way to put in pre-season miles whilst raising much needed funds along the way. The ride was very enjoyable and some of the scenery was amazing, I am not sure what we have planned for next year but this will take some beating” he added.”
