NWDA claims 08 celebrations will bring £100m to the North West

9th January 2008

The Northwest Development Agency believes that Liverpool’s Capital of Culture status, combined with a host of other celebrations scheduled for the region throughout the year, will bring in an extra £100m to the North West’s economy.

The £100m figure is derived from an estimation that £50m will come directly from the 1.7m visitors Liverpool’s 08 tag attracts, while the other £50m will be generated by a variety of additional public events.

These include Cheshire’s Year of Gardens, Cumbria and Lake District’s Year of Adventure, Manchester World Sport 08 and Taste Lancashire 08 – the Year of Food and Drink.

In a statement released by the development agency, executive director of marketing Peter Mearns commented: “This year is hugely important for the whole of the Northwest.

“As the celebrations get underway for Capital of Culture and Cumbria's Year of Adventure the eyes of the world will be on England’s Northwest and it is critical that we seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show the world exactly what we have to offer here. “

“Working with our partners across the Northwest on this unique programme of events will ensure that the legacy of 2008 is felt across the whole of the region.”
