Go Play Rugby!

5th October 2007

THE Rugby Football Union’s Go Play Rugby initiative has been wooing players back into the game via a huge nationwide recruitment campaign linked to the Rugby World Cup and Cumbria is a continuing part of that programme.

As part of the campaign the clubs in the Copeland area decided to run a series of four touch rugby tournaments aimed at encouraging players both male and female to try the sport, with the Egremont, Moresby, Whitehaven and St Benedict’s the host clubs involved. Tournaments were open to both male and female competitors of all ages with 25 teams and 247 players taking part in the 12-51 age range. Points where awarded for success throughout the series, but also for participation in the festivals to recognise the commitment of the teams a couple of which entered all dour tournaments. Whitehaven RUFC were the overall winners, while Egremont, St Benedict’s, and a composite team organised by Alex Price, a PE teacher at WyndhamSchool, were given prizes for repeat participation. The series was run by Gareth Lewis, the Community Rugby Coach for Copeland, through the Cleaner Safer Greener initiative from Copeland Borough Council, who said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to all the clubs and the volunteers who helped make the tournaments so successful. Also to all the players who took part for showing their support for such an event and for participating with such good spirit throughout.”

Anyone wishing to return to the game should get in touch with Gareth Lewis on 07772 112822.
