Sport England has awarded Glasson Rangers ARLFC an award of £70,000 to fund a new pitch. The funding comes from Sport England’s Community Club Development Programme.
Work will start on the site this spring and will be completed before the end of summer. The new grass pitch will then grow, ready for the players.
Stewart Kellett, Regional Director Sport England NW: ‘Sport England is delighted to support Glasson Rangers with this club development funding. It is a great club, with committed officials and volunteers. It has a strong future ahead of it. It already offers teams from under 8s upwards and is active in growing its youth section, forging excellent club-school links and in promoting the sport to girls as well as boys. It needs quality pitches on the club site so it can continue to attract new players and members.’
The club was the first Amateur Rugby League Club in Cumbria to be awarded the prestigious Sport England ‘Clubmark’ accreditation in October 2003. Clubmark status is in recognition of the club’s work in implementing procedures for working with volunteers, children and young people.
The club takes a partnership approach and works with the Rugby Football League and Cumbria Sport to promote the game in Maryport and across Allerdale. It works with seven local primary schools and other sports clubs.
Tony Tomlinson, Glasson ARLFC volunteer coaching and development said:
‘This club development funding from Sport England will make a massive difference to Glasson Rangers, and the wider community including all our local partner primary schools. Previously players had to walk to use unsuitable pitches, a distance away from the club. Having good pitches on the club site is crucial for the club, and for the whole community. Local schools will share the faciilities for school sports and their sports day events and junior football players will also benefit. It will help us attract more players to Glasson ARLFC and enhance the club’s standing.’
‘2008 is set to be an even more exciting year for the club as we work on plans for Phase II of our redevelopment, including work on a new club house facility.’
In 2007 volunteer Tony Tomlinson was named ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award at the 2007 Cumbria Sport Awards. He was recognised for the tireless work he carries out in developing Rugby League in the Maryport and Workington areas including creating and supporting the clubs Club - School Link programme.
The club welcomes volunteers and offers support and training. New player enquiries are always welcomed – teams range from under-8s to under-16s.
