Cumbria Inclusive Awareness Day -15th September 2008

11th September 2008

The countdown to London 2012 has begun! On Wednesday 17th September at the Paralympics closing ceremony, Beijing  will hand over the Olympic torch to the Mayor of London, and the whole of the Olympic and Paralympic movement will belong to the UK. This final Handover Ceremony marks the start of the build up to London 2012.

To mark this occasion, Cumbria Sport Partnership, Inclusive Fitness Initiative, Cumbria Primary Care Trust and Carlisle Leisure will be hosting “Cumbria’s Inclusive Sport, Leisure and Physical Activity Awareness Day”, to promote sport, leisure and physical activity opportunities to disabled people across Cumbria. The event will take place from 10.00am to 12.45pm on Monday 15th September at the Sands Centre in Carlisle, where a host of guest speakers will present on Healthy Lifestyles, Disability Sport development pathways and Inclusive Leisure opportunities. The Sands Centre is one of five Inclusive Fitness Initiative accredited leisure facilities in Cumbria which demonstrates inclusive fitness equipment, disability trained staff and accessible facilities.

Nicola Cartwright (Development Officer for Disability Sport and Equality) from Cumbria Sport Partnership said ‘The Olympic and Paralympic Handover will be a historic moment, not just for London but the whole of the UK. We are delighted that Cumbria will be joining in the celebrations by hosting this inclusive event. The Paralympic handover should be seen as a stepping stone towards increased awareness and engagement in London 2012 by individuals, organisations and businesses across the region’.

Across the UK children and young people are being encouraged to create special events to mark the moment the Paralympic Flag is handed over from Beijing to London. All schools and colleges have been sent a special pack including a timeline showing the history of the Paralympic Games and a short DVD featuring UK athletes who are going to compete at the Beijing Games. An online resource www.paralympichandover.london2012.com has been developed to provide schools, colleges and local authorities across the UK with useful tools, resources and ideas to create their own celebrations.

This event is suitable for individuals or people working with disabled people. If you are interested in attending or would like more information please contact Nick Lowe on 07956 398 747 or email nick@inclusivefitness.org. We look forward to celebrating the Paralympic closing ceremony with you!
