Calling all Copeland sports heros

22nd September 2008

Copeland Borough Council is searching for the borough’s sporting heroes to be recognised at an event celebrating sporting success in the borough.

Coming hot on the heels on Copeland born Alan Wills representing Team GB at the Olympic Games, the Mayor of Copeland, Cllr Keith Hitchen is launching a search for Copeland’s sporting talent.

Councillor Keith Hitchen said, “During my time as Mayor I have been incredibly lucky to meet a number of sporting heroes in the borough, from well known faces like Alan Wills and Joss Naylor, to teams and individuals who have not seen so much of the limelight, such as the Rowrah Velo team. I want to recognise and reward this success, but in doing this, I want to ensure that all of the borough’s sports stars, coaches and teams are recognised.”

The Mayor is calling on people to voice their opinions on who are Copeland’s sporting heroes – be they individuals, teams, volunteers or coaches. Tell us – in less than 100 words – what sport your nominee takes part in, and what makes them special. Send your nominations to communications@copeland.gov.uk , or Communications, Copeland Borough Council, The Copeland Centre, Catherine Street, Whitehaven, CA28 7SJ, or call 01946 598504. We need to receive them by September 30th.

Peter Tyas, Copeland Council’s acting Cultural Services Manager said, “Our Sports Development staff work with a wide range of teams, coaches and sporting heroes right across the borough, and we’re delighted to help the Mayor to celebrate these successes. We’re keen for as many of the borough’s successes as possible to be recognised, so I’d encourage anyone with any suggestions to get in touch.”

So if you know a sporting success, then let Copeland Borough Council know, to ensure they get the recognition they deserve.

The successes will be celebrated at a civic ceremony, which is planned to take place in October. The event will combine with the opening of a new exhibit at the Beacon, of a bust of well-known Copeland fell runner, Joss Naylor and the launch of new Sports and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) coaching and programmes in the borough.
