Rocky 2

These are the adventures of Rocky 2 as told by his travelling companion Ferdie Van De Walle.

Ferdie van de Walle from the Netherlands visited Cumbria in the weekend of 24/25 July 2004. On his departure, Jean Pennie, who works with Cumbria County Council, handed him over a red rucksack, which from that moment on carries the name of Rocky 2. Hopefully, Rocky 2 will experience as many exciting adventures as Rocky 1, which is still traveling somewhere over the globe.

The start for Rocky 2 was good. Already within a week's time Rocky 2 traveled to the other side of the world. His destination was Vanuatu in the South Pacific. But before arriving at this unusual location, Rocky 2 made stopovers in Maarssen in the Netherlands and Sydney in Australia. The photographs below give a brief report of Rocky 2's experiences. In Vanuatu, Rocky 2 was handed over to Nettie Moerman, who will take Rocky 2 to other exotic places.

In Maarssen, Rocky 2 had a good relaxing time. He enjoyed the view of the canal that flows through the village. Maarssen is also known as Little Amsterdam.

After a few days' break, Rocky traveled with Ferdie to Sydney. One is only allowed to leave Sydney after visiting the Opera House and the famous Harbour Bridge. Rocky 2 did the sightseeing on Ferdie's back when he ran 10 kilometers through the Botanical Garden.

In Sydney, Rocky 2 also took the opportunity to visit the Police Museum. When Ferdie hang him for a few seconds on the gate that surrounds the museum, a policeman ran away because he thought that Rocky 2 carried a bomb.

Early August, Ferdie and Rocky 2 arrived in Vanuatu in the South Pacific where they stayed for almost one month. Vanuatu is a small Pacific Islands state, which was formerly called the New Hebrides. It was a British/French colony. Vanuatu has a population of almost 200,000.

The visit to Vanuatu was most interesting for Rocky 2. He brought a visit to a traditional tamtam (wooden sculpture) and a nakamal or kava bar (kava is a relaxing drink which is only known on the islands in the South Pacific) and helped a few ni-Vanuatu (people from Vanuatu) preparing food.

Rocky 2's progress can be seen on the map below.

Towards the end of August, Ferdie passed Rocky 2 on to Nettie Moerman. Which unusual locations Rocky 2 will visit with Nettie will remain a secret for the time being.
