Rocky the Rucksack

The Cumbria Sport Rucksack Global Phenomenon

In November 2003 during a coffee break chat with Jean Pennie, Cumbria County Council's Policy Officer, we came up with the idea of sending one of our eyecatching bags, given to participants at the Cumbria Youth Games, on a trip around the world.  Jean would take the bag on holiday with her and pass it on to a like minded traveller who in turn would pass the bag on again.

The first bag went to South Africa, the Falkland Islands, California, the South Pole and the last we heard it was in Argentina.  The tale of the first bag inspired several Cumbrian individuals to take a bag away with them and photograph it at landmarks, so the bag was spotted in Sydney Harbour, at the Cyprus Ski Club, at the CN tower in Toronto and on Safari in the Gambia.  We also persuaded sporting personalities attending Cumbria Sport events to be photographed with the bag.

Now we have two more bags circulating the globe thanks to travellers who are willinging to take our bag and photograph it for us, really getting into the spirit of project.

Cumbria Sport bags have been to the South Pole, the Equator, the southernmost point of Africa where the Indian Ocean meets the Pacific and to the tallest free standing structure in the world.

If you have been a participant at the Youth Games or have received a bag at one of our events and would like to submit a photo forthe website, please e-mail becky.underwood@cumbriacc.gov.uk.
