CARLISLE WIN CUMBERLAND BUILDING SOCIETY CUMBRIA YOUTH GAMES 2008!

This years Cumberland Building Society Cumbria Youth Games saw Carlisle walk away with the title of 'Youth Games Winners 2008!'.

Competition was tough as over 600 youngsters took part in Hockey, Netball, Basketball, Rugby Union, Orienteering, Athletics, Tennis, Football, Cricket and a Multi-skills Disability Event. Teams from all six local authority areas in Cumbria came together in Carlisle on Saturday, July 5th for the competitive festival of sport. The opening and closing ceremonies were held at the Sands Centre, Carlisle, with events being held at Bitts Park, the Sheepmount and St Aidan’s School and Specialist Sports College.

This years event was slightly different to previous events, in that only primary aged children from 7-11 took part in the event, allowing primary age children to get the chance to train for and compete at a large event and introduce them to new sports that we hope they will continue to play!

The Cumbria Youth Games 2008, whose main sponsor was the Cumberland Building Society, also had a special guest appearance from champion Rugby Union player Tamara Taylor. Tamara has played rugby seriously since the age of 15, and has gone on to be part of the winning team at the 2006 6 Nations Grand Slam Champions, and runners up at the 2006 World Cup. Tamara was on hand to offer some sporting tips and advice to the young people taking part.

Organisers Cumbria Sport Partnership provided each participant and volunteer with fruit and refreshments and a number of mementos from this special event including a water bottle, t-shirt and bag.

Sponsorship to stage the event has been gratefully received from companies including Cumbrian Newspapers, Carlisle Leisure, New Balance, Print Express, Pioneer Foods, Carlisle City Council and all Local Authorities.

Richard Johnston, Games Manager, said “Despite the rain, the Youth Games 2008 was a fantastic day! In fact we think the kids enjoyed it even more this year splashing around in their ponchos! We would like to congratulate all children who took part and wowed us with their sporting talent, a big thank you to all those involved, and a big cheer goes out to this years well deserved winners-CARLISLE! It was wonderful to see so many children getting involved in new sports-sports that we hope will become part of their everyday lives now and in to the future!'
