Cueto Wins Top Award

Mark Cueto, The Cumbrian born England Rugby Union International has been crowned the Cumbria Sports Awards Personality of the Year.

He had a fantastic year, representing England both home and abroad, and being part of the British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand.

The Junior Sports Personality was again awarded to squash player Victoria Bell from Carlisle following another wonderful year. She is ranked number 1 in England in her age group of under 15. Earlier this year she represented England in victory at the European under 17 Championships and competed for England in the under 19 World Championships.

The Senior Team Award has been won by Whitehaven Rugby League Club, who won National League 1, but who were denied a place in super league rugby by a cruel Grand Final defeat.

The Junior Team Award goes to Thorncliffe School Under 16 Basketball Team, who became National Schools Champions, as well as being selected to represent England at the World Championships in Poland.

The Coach of the Year Award was won by Tony Tomlinson, a rugby league coach from the Workington area, who has been involved in coaching at all levels of the game from grass roots right through to elite player levels.

Stewart Kellett, Regional Director of Sport England in the North West, explained, "I understand the judging was particularly difficult again this year as there were a number of deserving nominations which continue to reflect the successes of sport in Cumbria and the depth of talent in the county.  The major achievements of individuals and teams are important in encouraging the next generation of sporting stars."
