Cumbria Sport Partnership - Setting the Standard for Equality in Sport
Cumbria Sport Partnership Board Members have made the following statement within a newly adopted Equality Policy to reflect their commitment to achieving the "Equality Standard":
"The Cumbria Sport Partnership is committed to achieving the Equality Standard A Framework for Sport and by doing so it will help to achieve an increase in participation in sport and physical activity from groups and individuals who are currently under represented.
The Cumbria Sports Partnership aims to ensure that all people, irrespective of age, gender, ethnic origin, ability, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or social status, have an equal opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity at all levels and all roles".

Equality Standard A Framework for Sport
At Cumbria Sport we are passionate about providing widened access and reducing inequalities for everyone participating in Sport or Physical Activity across Cumbria. This is promoted through both our actions and attitudes. In the next 12 months a mechanism for the continued drive for Equity in Cumbria Sport will be achieved through the implementation of the Equality Standard.
The Equality Standard - A Framework for Sport - is a framework to guide sports and community organisations towards achieving equality. It will assist the Partnership in developing structures and processes, assessing performance and ensuring continuous improvement in equality as an imposed requirement from central Government and Sport England.
By using the 'Equality Standard' as a tool to improve services, more and more people from under represented groups will have the opportunity to enjoy a quality experience in sport and physical activity in Cumbria.
The Standard consists of two main areas of activity: developing your organisation and developing your services. There are four levels of achievement: Foundation, Preliminary, Intermediate and Advanced. The Partnership is currently working towards attaining the first two levels by the end of March 2007.

Sport Achieving Equality
Our Commitment to Sports Equality
Cumbria Sport is committed to making sport and physical activity equally accessible to all sections of the community regardless of their race, gender, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation or economic status (REGARDS). We recognise that inequalities currently do exist and that some groups are not involved in sport as much as others. We are committed to working to overcome these inequalities. To us Sports Equality is about:
- fairness in sport, equality of access, recognising inequalities and taking steps to address them,
- changing the culture and structure of sport to ensure that it becomes equally accessible to all members of society,
- making sure that all people can realise their talent and fulfil their potential and
- an individual's responsibility to challenge discriminatory practice and promote inclusion.
Sports Equity is about fairness in Sport, equality of access, recognizing inequalities and taking steps to address them. It is about changing the culture and structure of sport to ensure that it becomes equally accessible to all members of society, whatever their age, ability, gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality or socio-economic status.
Priority Groups
As part of Cumbria Sports committment to equality we are working to widen access and reduce inequalities in sport and physical activity from under representative individuals groups and communities, especially women and girls, ethnic minority groups and disabled people.
Fairness & Inclusion
In the continued strive to achieve equality in sport the actions we take as individuals, in our clubs or in our organisations is increasingly important. In order to help this process Sport England have provided an online training programme. This not only provides invaluable information, but the opportunity for you to plan how you can action these values within your community.
